# Website builders and CMS platforms compared

A practical look at how leading platforms approach layout, responsive design, reusable styles, structured content, version history, custom code, AI workflows, and pricing.

## There is no single best website builder

The right platform depends on what you are building, who will maintain it, and how much control you want. Some tools prioritize speed and polished templates. Others expose the mechanics of modern CSS so experienced designers can control almost every detail. Traditional content management systems put publishing and extensibility first.

This comparison looks at the strongest qualities of five established platforms, then explains where Lunasites takes a different approach. The goal is not to declare one universal winner. It is to make the tradeoffs clear enough that you can choose a tool that matches your team.

## Squarespace: polished design with a gentle learning curve

Squarespace is strongest when a business, portfolio, publication, or store needs to look polished quickly. Its templates, global site styles, commerce features, and managed hosting reduce the number of technical decisions a user has to make.

Fluid Engine gives modern Squarespace sites a visual grid where blocks can be moved, resized, layered, and overlapped. Desktop and mobile layouts can be arranged separately. Tablet behavior is responsive, but there is no equivalent dedicated tablet layout editor between those two views.

Compared with Squarespace, Lunasites asks the user to make more layout decisions but offers a dedicated tablet canvas, reusable block style presets, custom content types, richer publishing workflows, and direct MCP authoring. Squarespace remains a strong choice for users who value a curated system and want to launch with minimal setup.

### Squarespace pricing

Squarespace does not have a permanent free plan, but every website starts with a 14 day free trial. Paid plans start at $16 per month when billed annually, and annual subscriptions can save up to 36 percent compared with monthly billing. Hosting is included, and a new annual subscription includes a custom domain for the first year. Every paid tier can sell products or services, although commerce features, payment rates, and transaction fees vary by plan.

## Wix Studio: a broad ecosystem with capable responsive tools

Wix is attractive because it combines website building with a large ecosystem of business features, including stores, bookings, events, forms, marketing tools, and member experiences. Wix Studio extends the platform for agencies and professional designers.

Current Wix Studio sites begin with desktop, tablet, and mobile breakpoints, and designers can add more. Sections use cells and grids, with an advanced CSS grid available for precise responsive control. Its CMS supports collections, dynamic list pages, and dynamic item pages that share a common layout. Wix also keeps site history and can restore saved versions.

The important distinction is not that Wix lacks grids or responsive editing. It is that Wix Studio uses a deeper hierarchy of sections, cells, containers, responsive behaviors, and optional CSS grid settings. Lunasites uses a more direct 24 column, 12 column, and 8 column canvas where blocks can be moved, resized, overlapped, and layered at each primary breakpoint. For many users, that simpler spatial model is easier to understand.

### Wix Studio pricing

Wix Studio plans start at $19 per month when billed annually, and month to month plans are also available. The entry price includes hosting, but a paid plan is required for a custom domain and professional publishing. Higher tiers add storage, collaborators, CMS capacity, payment features, and business tools. Wix pricing varies by location and billing cycle, so the final amount may differ from the advertised starting price.

## Webflow: deep visual control for people who understand the web

Webflow is one of the most capable visual development platforms. Its Style panel exposes layout, spacing, size, positioning, typography, backgrounds, borders, effects, and custom properties. Classes, combo classes, variables, Flexbox, CSS Grid, and responsive breakpoints make it possible to create sophisticated design systems without writing every line of CSS by hand.

Its CMS is also mature. Collections define structured content, Collection pages provide one reusable template for every item, and Collection lists populate pages dynamically. Current Webflow plans also include AI features, an MCP server, backups, and more advanced publishing capabilities at higher tiers.

That power also gives Webflow a steep learning curve. A first time user can find the interface difficult because building confidently requires an understanding of the box model, Flexbox, Grid, positioning, class inheritance, and breakpoint cascading. It behaves more like a visual interface for CSS than a simple website builder, so new users should expect to spend time learning its layout system before working efficiently. Lunasites does not yet match every interaction or design system capability in Webflow. Its advantage is that users can create expressive responsive layouts with a smaller set of concepts, while the CMS, workflow, and AI authoring model remain part of the same product.

### Webflow pricing

Webflow has a free Starter plan for learning and publishing on a Webflow subdomain. A custom domain requires a paid Site plan. Basic costs $15 per month when billed annually and is intended for sites without CMS content. Premium costs $25 per month when billed annually and adds Webflow CMS for content rich websites. The price is charged per site, taxes are extra, and larger teams or advanced organizational needs can introduce separate platform or collaboration costs.

## Framer: design led websites with strong motion and collaboration

Framer is especially strong for design led marketing sites, portfolios, product launches, and teams that care about motion and visual polish. It combines a flexible canvas with stacks, grids, reusable components, responsive breakpoints, interactions, publishing, and a modern collaboration experience.

Framer also includes CMS collections, reusable CMS detail pages, responsive text and color styles, version history, staging on higher plans, and AI Agents. Its current product direction is increasingly capable, including external agent connections in preview.

As with Webflow, the most reliable Framer layouts are often built through responsive stacks, grids, components, sizing rules, and breakpoint overrides. Those tools provide considerable design freedom, but they also introduce more layout concepts. Lunasites is positioned for teams that want a freer grid than a template first builder and a simpler model than a visual CSS editor, even if that means fewer advanced motion and component capabilities today.

### Framer pricing

Framer has a free plan for experimentation and publishing on a Framer domain. With yearly billing, Basic costs $10 per month and Pro costs $30 per month. Basic includes a custom domain, two CMS collections, and 50 GB of bandwidth. Pro expands CMS capacity, bandwidth, staging, and branching. Additional design editors cost $20 per editor each month, content editors cost $10, and optional localization, testing, and hosting features can raise the total.

## WordPress: publishing depth and an unmatched ecosystem

WordPress remains a reference point for content management because of its enormous theme and plugin ecosystem, familiar post editing, custom post types, taxonomies, templates, Query Loop blocks, user roles, and broad hosting choices. With a block theme, the Site Editor can manage templates, styles, headers, footers, and reusable patterns.

WordPress also has a mature revisions system for posts and pages. It is often the best choice when a project depends on a specific plugin, a large publishing ecosystem, or complete control over hosting and application code.

Its flexibility comes with variability. The final experience depends on the theme, page builder, plugins, hosting provider, and maintenance practices selected for the site. Lunasites offers a more integrated environment where the visual builder, content model, hosting, publishing, design system, forms, SEO, History, and AI authoring tools are designed to work together from the start.

### WordPress pricing

WordPress.org software is free and open source, but a self hosted site still needs hosting and a domain and may add paid themes, plugins, security, backups, and maintenance. For a managed comparison, WordPress.com has a free plan. Its annual prices are $4 per month for Personal, $8 for Premium, $25 for Business, and $45 for Commerce. Paying monthly raises those prices to $9, $18, $40, and $70. Annual plans include a domain for the first year, but the total cost of a WordPress project still depends heavily on the hosting and extensions selected.

## What Lunasites brings to the table

Lunasites is not trying to copy one competitor feature for feature. Its central idea is to combine visual freedom, structured content, and AI assisted authoring in a system that remains understandable to designers, editors, and developers.

### Direct grid placement without a container maze

Sections use a 24 column desktop grid, a 12 column tablet grid, and an 8 column mobile grid. Blocks can be moved, resized, overlapped, and layered directly at each breakpoint. The grid provides structure, but users do not need to build every composition through several nested wrappers, stacks, or containers. Inline Editing is available when an article should flow naturally instead of behaving like a canvas.

### A dedicated desktop, tablet, and mobile workflow

Each primary device size has its own visual editing surface. Desktop establishes the main composition, while tablet and mobile can inherit or receive deliberate overrides. This gives authors more control than a desktop and mobile only workflow, without requiring them to manage a large number of custom breakpoints.

### Reusable presets and a detailed Style Panel

Block styles can be saved as presets, edited centrally, and applied wherever they are needed. The Style Panel covers spacing, typography, backgrounds, borders, effects, hover states, transforms, transitions, and responsive overrides. A site wide font and typography system keeps headings, paragraphs, custom text styles, and responsive font behavior consistent across the complete website.

### A structured CMS inside the builder

Lunasites includes predefined content types and lets teams create custom content types with their own fields and reusable visual templates. Articles, news, projects, events, and other content can share one format without copying page designs manually. Listing blocks can automatically show the latest content and can be configured with queries, filters, facets, layouts, and pagination. Content can remain private while it is being prepared, then move to a published state when it is ready.

### History that follows the editing workflow

Lunasites records versions so a team can return to an earlier state of a page or design. Changes made through MCP are grouped around the complete editing request, which makes the History entry easier to understand than a long sequence of tiny automated edits.

### MCP as a core authoring interface

Compatible AI assistants can inspect pages, create and update sections and blocks, work with structured content, edit SEO, review responsive layouts, and publish through MCP. The result stays as native, editable Lunasites content. Users can work with the AI assistant and subscription they already prefer instead of being limited to one built in generator. Webflow and Framer are also adding agent integrations, so the meaningful difference is how deeply the workflow is connected to the content model and visual editor.

### A controlled escape hatch for custom ideas

When standard blocks are not enough, the Custom Code block can contain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This makes room for experiments, specialized interactions, and ideas that do not yet have a native block. AI can help write that code, while the rest of the page continues to use ordinary editable blocks.

### A deliberately low price during beta

Lunasites currently has a Free plan that supports up to 10 websites on Lunasites subdomains with the main platform features. Connecting a custom domain requires Pro, priced at €4.99 per month or €47.88 per year, equal to €3.99 per month with annual billing. Hosting, the visual builder, CMS, responsive editing, History, forms, SEO tools, custom code, and MCP authoring are part of the integrated product. Prices were checked on 21 August 2026 and can change, so readers should confirm the latest plan pages before choosing.

## Which platform should you choose?

Choose Squarespace when you want a curated design system, polished templates, commerce tools, and the fastest route to a professional small business or portfolio site.

Choose Wix when a broad business ecosystem, apps, bookings, stores, memberships, and flexible agency tooling matter more than having the simplest editor.

Choose Webflow when your team wants deep control over HTML and CSS concepts, a mature visual development workflow, a capable CMS, and advanced design system tools.

Choose Framer when motion, visual polish, rapid marketing iteration, components, and a designer focused collaboration experience are the priorities.

Choose WordPress when you need its plugin ecosystem, publishing maturity, hosting flexibility, or a specialized integration that already exists in the WordPress community.

Choose Lunasites when you want direct responsive grid design, a structured CMS, reusable block styling, versioned publishing, custom code, and AI collaboration in one approachable platform at a low current price.

## The most useful difference is the mental model

Feature lists rarely explain how a tool feels in daily use. Webflow and Framer reward teams that want to think in responsive layout systems. Squarespace rewards users who prefer strong defaults. Wix rewards businesses that want a large integrated ecosystem. WordPress rewards projects that need maximum extensibility.

Lunasites aims for a middle path. It offers more layout freedom and content structure than a template first builder, while keeping the everyday authoring model simpler than a visual CSS environment. Its strongest argument is not one isolated feature. It is the combination of grid based design, structured content, reusable styles, workflow states, History, custom code, and MCP collaboration in one coherent workspace.
